After a solid 3-2 win over conference foe Herrin, Massac County’s baseball Patriots have hit a rough patch, dropping four straight conference games.

A 14-0 pounding at home at the hands of Harrisburg’s Bulldogs followed a tough 5-2 road loss at West Frankfort.

The road proved no kinder in their next two games as evidenced by a tough 4-3 loss Saturday at Benton and a tougher, error-plagued 5-2 loss Monday at Harrisburg.

The young Pats have been getting solid and sometimes terrific pitching, but the bats have been mostly quiet and the defense highly erratic.

The shellacking by Harrisburg was about as disagreeable as the weather.

At West Frankfort, the Pats had one bad inning, but it was a costly one as the Redbirds took advantage of a couple of Patriot errors and strung three singles together in a four-hit inning to plate five runs in their fourth at bat.
