The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has scheduled a public meeting in Metropolis for Thursday, May 1 to discuss the agency’s recent review of the Honeywell Metropolis Works uranium conversion facility.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St.
The NRC staff will discuss the results of the agency’s review of safety performance at the plant from Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2013 with company officials.
The discussion will include the areas of safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and other areas.
In its review, the NRC identified one area needing improvement.
The NRC continues to review Honeywell’s revised Integrated Safety Analysis, which is related to the extensive modifications the company made during the review period to ensure the facility can withstand severe seismic and wind events.
The document is being reviewed to verify the company has complied with the requirements of an NRC Confirmatory Order regarding the modifications.
The meeting will be open to the public and media, and NRC officials will be available to answer questions after the business portion of the meeting.
