Helen E. Gurley, 97, of Metropolis, passed away at 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Massac County.

She was of the Methodist faith and loved animals.

Helen is survived by her nephew, Wayne Gurley and wife Vicki of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; her daughter-in-Christ, Linda Parr of Metropolis; and her sister-in-Christ, Shirley Sommer of Metropolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Byrd and Bertha Alice Arensman Gurley; her sister, Alice Gurley; her brothers, John Byrd Gurley Jr. and George L. Gurley; her sisters-in-law, Lora Gurley and Mattie Gurley; and her nephews, George Melvin and Lindell Gurley.

Graveside service was held Friday at St. John’s Cemetery on Waldo Church Road with Chaplain Kathy Benard officiating.

Music was provided by Clark Williams and Logan Libby.

Pallbearers were Tom Mittendorf, Marvin Eckenberg, Mike Helton, Bob Miller, Clark Williams and Charles Parr.

Honorary pallbearers were Dale Mittendorf, Donald Bunting and Bryan Bunting.

Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis was in charge of arrangements.
