After wins over the Lady Lions from Carterville in each of the last two regional tournaments, Massac County’s Lady Patriots’ spell over the Lady Lions was broken Saturday at Jonesboro.

The Lady Lions erupted for 11 runs in the fifth inning and went on to post a 12-6 win over the Lady Pats.

Trailing 3-1 entering the fifth inning, the Lady Lions exploded, leaving everyone a little shell-shocked. Three home runs, a bases-clearing double and an error by Massac accounted for just about all of the damage wrought by Carterville in the fateful inning.

Kylee Rock got things rolling for Carterville with a two-run homer. Avery English, who also pitched a pretty solid game, clubbed a pair of homers in the inning, and Megan Barrett ripped a three-run double in the huge frame.

While not exactly on cruise control for the first four innings, Lady Patriots pitcher Brittany McFall seemed to be in control enough to take the girls home, but it wasn’t to be.

Trailing 12-3 after the eruption by Carterville, the Lady Pats summoned up enough grit to put three more runs on the board and made the final count a more respectable 12-6.

Josie Garduno smacked a two-run double in the sixth, and Gracyn McBride connected for a seventh-inning home run for the final margin.

MCHS coach Pat Clark commended his troops for not quitting after the shocking fifth inning.

“One thing about our team is they don’t lay down and quit. I told them to make them earn those last six outs they had to get,” he said. “The way we fought back just shows the kind of kids we have, and I am very proud of them.”

The Lady Patriots ended their season at 19-7.

Carterville advances with a record of 26-6.

A booming three-run homer by McBride and another shutout performance from McFall keyed the Lady Pats 15-0 rout of Murphysboro in the first game of regional play on May 21.
