Staff Report

This year’s participants of the Superman Road Race on June 12 were treated to nice temperatures as they hit the pavement throughout the streets of Metropolis and Fort Massac State Park.

According to Janet Foster, organizer of the race, “The race night was great. We watched the radar all afternoon, and it appeared something would occur around race time.  However, the line of rain seemed to split and go around us.  That was awesome.

“The United Way team has been a real blessing in the organization of the Superman Race.  People don’t realize the preparation required for this event.  More importantly, the race could not happen without the commitment of the volunteers, some of whom benefit from the United Way fundraisers, some whom are involved with MCHS Cross Country, including dedicated parents and a core group of volunteers who have been helping with registration as long as the race has been in existence,” explained Foster. “A big thank you goes out to all our sponsors for allowing us to provide shirts and towels to the participants and plaques to the winners.”

The race attracted more walkers than ever, at 106 participants due to the City of Metropolis firefighters sponsoring Walk For Jared.

Metropolis native Jared Bullock was severely injured in Afghanistan on Nov. 13, 2013 and since that time his family, friends and the community have offered their support for the fallen soldier.

“The addition of the firefighters walking made the event extra special and even a bit emotional,” Foster added. “ I am so glad they were able to do the walk for Jared.”

Jovan Winders, 16, of Mansfield, Tenn., was the top overall finisher at the race. He finished the four-mile course in 20:58.7.
