The field in this year’s Superman Classic two-day couples tournament was one of the smallest in recent history this past weekend at Metropolis Country Club (MCC)
Soaring gas prices, flagging economy, steamy weather and overall sub-par conditions at almost all local golf courses produced the smallish field of around 60 couples.
While MCC has recovered a great deal from the damage done by the winter that never ended, just the conversations about local courses and conditions had to have had an adverse effect on the crowd.
Nonetheless, the two-day event went off without a hitch weather-wise and produced some really nice scores.
The team of Kirsten Faulkner and Thomas Simpson shot a two day total of 125 — 17 under par — to take first place overall.
The event was flighted after Saturday’s opening round and yielded four total flights and payouts to 17 teams.
Second place in the championship flight was claimed by two teams. The teams of Gifford/Gifford and Shockley/Stoll shot identical 127s. The team of King/King came in third at 130.
In the A flight, the team of Lambert/Spears took first place with a 134. Stroup/Stroup were second at 135, and third was split between three teams.
The B flight produced a tie between the teams of Alexander/Alexander and Korte/Korte. Third place belonged to Ennen/Ennen and fourth was claimed by Scott/Scott.
C flight’s top prize went to Jeffords/Jeffords with the team of Shockley/Shockley taking second. Devers/Helm took third and fourth place went to Bean/Bean.
