With vacations and the like taking a toll on his team early on, American LegionPost 306 coach Bob Simpson likes what he sees from his team now.

Ending the season with a modest winning streak and, most importantly, a full roster, Simpson is optimistic about Metropolis’ chances this weekend as tournament play begins on Saturday in Carmi.

“We’re hitting the ball better and our pitching is about as good as you’re going to see in our district,” he said.

“The kids have gotten to know each other and are pulling together now.”

With the popularity of “traveling teams” and probably a few other issues, American Legion baseball is going through a rough patch now in this area and the schedule for play in Carmi this weekend may still have to be adjusted.

As of press time, Metropolis is slated to play at 4:30 p.m.
