James A. Metcalf, 67, of Paducah, died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at his home.

Born Dec. 19, 1946 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Dr. Metcalf graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1965. 

He then attended Northwestern University for an undergraduate degree.  In 1969, he entered into the Northwestern University Medical School.  After medical school, he completed a neurology residency at UCLA and a neurophysiology fellowship in Arizona.  During this time he also served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lt., honorably discharged in 1976.

Dr. Metcalf returned to Paducah in 1979 and for the next 45 years practiced community based general neurology and sleep medicine.   

He was a member of Lone Oak First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Metcalf; three sons, Reid, Cameron and Baron Metcalf; four grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. John Metcalf, of Metropolis.

He was predeceased by his father, John Allen Metcalf; and his mother, Lois Metcalf Willett.

A memorial service was held Monday at Lone Oak First Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Summerlin officiating.

Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah was in charge of arrangements.
