Mark K. Garner, 60, a retired master sergeant 3286 with the Illinois State Police, passed away at his home in Spencer Heights near Mounds on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at First Baptist Church of Ullin with Pastor Clint Nale and Dr. Larry Potts officiating. Burial will follow at Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds.

Born to Faye and Marvin Garner on Jan. 19, 1954, Mark grew up in Salem until his family moved to Joppa, where Marvin Garner worked for the C&EI Railroad.

Mark married Angel Marie Jones on Nov. 2, 2013, and she survives.

Mark graduated from Joppa High School in May 1972. On May 30, 1977, Mark joined the Metropolis Police Department beginning his craft in law enforcement. He then joined the Illinois State Police in Cadet Class 73 on Nov. 5, 1984. After graduating the Illinois State Police Academy, Mark worked the toll way in Chicago and then transferred to District 13A Cairo, which was later formed into District 22 Ullin in August 1990.

He retired from the Illinois State Police as a master sergeant in June 2008.

Mark was known for his leadership and his unique ability to handle any situation that came his way. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and charming sense of humor.

Mark loved to read books, collect railroad and Star Trek memorabilia and riding his Kubota tractor. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his other furry children.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Rachel Garner of Paducah; his son, Kevin Garner and wife Kari of Ledbetter, Kentucky; two stepsons, Brant Blackburn and wife Emily of Salem and Derrick Rader of Ullin; his stepdaughter, Kelsey Dale and husband Bob of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Taylor Ann and Matthew Tyler Blackburn and Ethan James Garner; his mother, Faye Garner of Metropolis; three brothers, John Garner and wife Lori of New Orleans, Louisiana and Greg Garner and wife Carolyn and Robert Garner and wife Debbie, all of Metropolis; two sisters, Kathy Johnson and husband Dwayne of Metropolis and Mary Roberts and husband Jim of Knoxville, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Virginia Garner of Vandalia; a Goddaughter, Aurora Schubert of Paducah; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Garner; one granddaughter, Ella Nicole Garner; and one brother, Wiley Garner.

Memorials may be made to the Upward Basketball Program at Mighty Rivers Church in Cairo; the Ullin First Baptist Church; any local pet rescue program; or to the March of Dimes.

The family requests for those who will be attending the funeral, that they share a story or a memory of Mark. By sharing these stories and memories, it can help Mark’s family and friends heal and keep his memory alive.

Note cards will be available at the church and a collection basket will be in place to collect the responses. The family would like to send a thank you in advance for the submissions.
