Massac County’s football Patriots made the long road trip to Freeburg, which is just south and east of Belleville, last Friday night, and after the 42-14 pounding the Pats took, the trip home must have seemed like an eternity.

Turnovers and poor tackling resulted in the Pats finding themselves behind the eight ball early as the Freeburg Midgets claimed a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a punt return for a touchdown and two running plays that found paydirt.

That three touchdown lead swelled to five markers at the half as the Midgets returned a fumble recovery 71 yards for a touchdown, and Keegan Baxmeyer darted in for his second touchdown of the night with 3:22 left in the half. Three minutes into the third quarter, Joe Wolf found Wil Hogan for an 18-yard touchdown strike and the Midgets owned a 42 point lead.
