River-to-River hike is SaturdayThe River-to-River Trail Society will hold its seventh scheduled hike of the spring 2021 season on Saturday, April 24, at Kinkaid Lake in Jackson County; meet at 10 a.m. at the trailhead by taking Highway 149 to Spillway Road and proceed north to the parking lot. The hike is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. This will be a 5-mile hike of moderate difficulty with some uphill walking and some off-trail hiking. Hikers should bring their own water and a snack; hiking sticks and boots or sturdy shoes are strongly recommended; no dogs, please. MCDAC meets WednesdayMassac County Drug Awareness Coalition (MCDAC) meets the third Wednesday of every month at 8 a.m. via Zoom. Meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is Wednesday, April 21. MCDAC is a group of volunteers determined to provide leadership, education and resources in order to build and sustain communities of knowledgeable citizens who make healthy and safe choices through the reduction of substance abuse. Brick campaign for Superman statue renovations to end April 30Brick sales to fund renovations to Superman statue base will be coming to an end on April 30. Bricks can be purchased online at supermancelebration.net or by calling the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce at 524-2714. A 4-inch-by-8-inch brick is $100. The brick may be engraved with up to three lines of text with each line having up to 13 alphabetic or numeric characters and any spacing or punctuation. A rededication ceremony of the statue is planned for the Superman Celebration, which is scheduled for July 30 through Aug. 1.

Joppa-Maple Grove holding Child Find screening on May 3The Joppa-Maple Grove School District will sponsor Child Find on Thursday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the Maple Grove Elementary School library. Screening is by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling 543-7434, ext. 1201. Preschool children, ages 3-5, who reside in the Joppa-Maple Grove School district need to be screened. Illinois state law requires this screening for all children entering kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year. The process takes approximately an hour.

Southern Seven holding COVID-19 Remembrance Day Ceremony on May 4Southern Seven Health Department is coordinating a region-wide COVID-19 Remembrance Day ceremony for 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the Southern Seven administrative building, 37 Rustic Campus Dr., Ullin. Residents are invited to attend. Masking and social distancing will be observed. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the department’s Facebook page.
