Kiwanis Peanut Day planned
The Metropolis Kiwanis Club will launch the 2019 Peanut Day fundraising project on Saturday, Sept. 14 and again on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Kiwanis and Massac County High School Key Club will set up roadblocks at two intersections in Metropolis to solicit donations and distribute peanuts. Monies help fund academic scholarships for Massac County students and also support other local projects.
Miss Metropolis Boot Camp set
Area young women, ages 13-26, are invited to attend the Miss Metropolis 2.0 Boot Camp from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 520 Ferry St. in Metropolis. The camp is for those who would like to know more about the Miss Metropolis competition, which is set for Sunday, Oct. 20. The boot camp will include information about personal interview, platform/social impact initiative, help with talent selection and onstage posing and walking instruction. Participants should bring platform ideas, samples of their talent and heels for walking, with no platform shoes. Water and light snacks will be furnished. Worship in the Park planned
First Christian Church in Metropolis invites the public for Sunday Morning Worship at Fort Massac Park in the area across from the Girl Scout House on Sunday, Sept. 15. Fellowship with coffee and donuts will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Worship service with special music by Eric Horner starts at 10:30 a.m. A love offering will be collected, and communion will be served. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on and a covered dish to share. Potluck luncheon will follow the service.
Retired teachers to meet
The Johnson County Retired Teachers will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 11:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Vienna Methodist Church. Lunch will be catered, thus a count of those planning to attend is needed. Individuals should call Nancy Ford as soon as possible to confirm registration at 618-658-8136 or 618-771-1016. All retired teachers are welcome to attend. The program will include updates on current issues.
Just Friends to perform
Just Friends will be the featured band at Monday Night Live on Sept. 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St., Monday Night Live features live bands and dancing. A donation is required in order for this program to continue.
Benefit to help soldiers kids
The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Father John Fallon Assembly 312 of Paducah, will host a fundraiser for the Fort Campbell, Kentucky's Little Soldiers/Holiday House Christmas Program. The funds will be designed to help children of the 101st Airborne to receive gifts for Christmas. Cordavino's, located at 310 Ferry St. in Metropolis, will give a portion of sales to the program on Tuesday, Sept. 17. A donation jar will also be available. Everyone is encouraged to stop by.
Food pantry open next week
Emmanuel Temple Ministries COGIC, located at 509 Broadway in Metropolis, will distribute food from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The food pantry is here to serve the community, and all are welcome. For more information, contact Daphane Jackson 618-638- 7099.
