VBS begins on Sunday
Metropolis, First United Methodist Church, located at 100 E. Fifth St., will host Vacation Bible School (VBS) from 6-8 p.m. from Sunday, Aug. 4 through Wednesday, Aug. 7. This year's VBS will feature an Epic Adventure as students learn God's wisdom as found in the book of Proverbs. A small meal will be served on weekdays at 5:30 p.m. VBS will start Sunday with a splash at the city pool for family night. Wednesday will conclude with a dunking booth where attendance winners can take their best shot.
Each night, coins will be collected for personal hygiene items to be purchased and to donated to area schools. For bus pickup or more information, contact Dena Hopkins at 618-524-9325.
Benefit dinner is August 11
Vienna Masonic Lodge 150 AF&AM and Egyptian Chapter 30 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Masonic Temple on Old Route 146 Loop. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The menu will include deep-fried fish filets, hushpuppies, French fries, barbecue beans, cole slaw, dessert and drink. The cost is $10 for adults; $5 for children, ages 6-12; and children under 6 eat free. Carryout orders will be available. The public is invited.
Church homecoming is Sunday
Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, located at 3973 Oak Grove Rd. near Metropolis, will celebrate its 68th annual homecoming Sunday. An all day service is planned. Sunday School is at 10 a.m., and morning worship is at 11 a.m. Rev. Robert Meadows is the speaker for the morning service. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m., and afternoon worship is at 2 p.m. Rev. Mark Chapman is the host pastor. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Breakin' Even to perform
Breakin' Even will be the featured band at Monday Night Live on Aug. 5, starting at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St., Monday Night Live features live bands and dancing. A donation is required in order for this program to continue.
Post 306 hosting event
Metropolis American Legion Post 306 Ladies Auxiliary host a Lucky Sevens event the first Saturday of each month with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the early bird games starting at 6 p.m. The post is located at 321 Market St. Players may bring dobbers, or they may be purchased at the post. For information, call 524-2043. All proceeds benefit the auxiliary and their programs for area veterans.
Free block party is Saturday
Hope Unlimited Family Care Center, located at 1101 Jefferson St. in Paducah, will host a free block party for area families from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. Featured will be free food, cotton candy, free haircuts, bounce house, fire truck and more. The street will be closed between Jefferson and Monroe. Everyone is welcome.
Spinners, Weavers to meet
Southern Illinois Spinners and Weavers Guild will meet from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the visitor's center at Fort Massac State Park. All spinners and weavers are welcome to participate.
Gamblers Anonymous meet
Gamblers Anonymous meets every Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 100 E. Fifth St. in Metropolis. Attendees are encouraged to enter from the south side of the church.
Retirees to meet next week
Retired employees from AlliedSignal/Honeywell will meet for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5 at Waffle Hut, located off I-24, Exit 3 on Old Cairo Road.
Quilters gather on Monday
Massac County Quilters will meet at 9 a.m. the first Monday of each month at the Metropolis Community Center at 900 W. 10th St. Workshops or demonstrations are held monthly. Anyone interested in quilting is invited to attend. For information, call 270-558-5596.
