Fort Massac Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, at its March 27 meeting honored three area high school seniors with the Good Citizen Award.

Malik Ballard from Meridian High School, Matthew McGinness from Joppa High School and Lilyanna Conkle from Massac County High School were awarded the Good Citizen Award and each received a certificate, a pin and a scholarship award.

Ballard will graduate from high school and also Shawnee Community College with an associate’s degree. He will be transferring to the University of Illinois in September where he will major in marketing.

McGinness will be attending Murray State this fall and will major in business.

Conkle has received a golf scholarship from Freed-Hardeman University and plans to major in biology with the goal of becoming a physician’s assistant.

The Good Citizen program recognizes outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools and communities. The program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. It is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education.

The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the following qualities:

• Dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality, etc.);

• Service (cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility, etc.);

• Leadership (personality, self-control, initiative, etc.); and

• Patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals).
