The planning for the spring 2023 Massac County Academic Awards Ceremony is underway. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, at the Metropolis Community Center.
The Academic Awards Ceremony honors students from Joppa and Massac County high schools who have participated in academic competitions during the school year. This is the 38th year the ceremony has been held.
In addition, the night also includes the awarding of scholarships to graduating seniors for their scholastic achievements. Since 1985, a total of $481,150 in scholarships has been awarded to 484 students.
“Many of these students have gone on to college, graduated from colleges and universities and are currently holding responsible and respectable positions in our community or in other communities in the United States or abroad,” said Dan Huffman, chairman of the Academic Awards Ceremony steering committee.
The Academic Awards Ceremony is sponsored jointly by the Kiwanis Club of Metropolis, Metropolis Rotary Club, Joppa High School and Massac County High School. The steering committee is made up of members from the sponsoring organizations and faculty members who serve as sponsors for the high school teams in annual academic competitions.
“These representatives strongly support this outstanding activity for our youth,” Huffman said.
The scholarship funds are available from money donated by local businesses, civic organizations and individuals through their annual contributions. Student scholarship winners are determined by a review of applications with the final determination made by judges affiliated with the Southern Illinois Community Foundation. Tax deductible donations to the Massac Academic Ceremony may be made by visiting SICF online at sicf.org/MCASF. Donors will receive recognition for their contributions in the official awards program.
