I’ll start with birthdays this week. James George, Thelma Lawrence and Frances Pullen will celebrate today, Thursday, March 2; Barbara Bailey on March 3; Jeff Windhorst, March 4; Charles Reynolds, March 5; Clyde Carruthers, March 7; and Julie Jacobs, March 8. I hope each of you have a merry day.
The youth basketball league has ended its season. Videos of the playoff games can be seen on YouTube. A link is on the Harry Statham Youth Basketball League Facebook page. Unfortunately, the last minutes of the girls’ overtime didn’t get recorded due to technical difficulties with the camera.
Harry and Rose Statham made it down for the playoffs. The organizer for the league, Chad Brown, once played for Statham at McKendree University. As I have mentioned before, Statham graduated from Brookport High School in 1955 and was one of the first to play in the gym built in 1953. It was only fitting to have the league named after him. I just love it when all the facts intertwine in a historical sense.
I see Greg Williamson is expanding his trucking business in town. A new entrance to the alley was made and an addition to the building will be put on the old alley and the lot next door. Good luck in his endeavors. More business in town is good for Brookport.
Beware the Ides of March. Wednesday, March 15, is the last day to purchase city stickers for resident vehicles. After that, a late fee will be assessed and cars can be ticketed for not having one. The initial cost is $20 for the first car and a reduced fee for the second. Originally, it was for sidewalk repairs, but since it goes in the general fund, who knows where it goes.
With this warmer weather, mowing will soon be starting. My wild garlic is getting pretty tall. It’s the tallest thing in my yard. I have chickweed, moss and wood violets mostly. Any grass I had is disappearing. Diversity is good, I think, and I don’t have any sheep to feed, so grass is just a troublesome weed that needs mowing. That’s one way to look at it.
