It’s bingo for the Senior Citizens and the Next Generation on Tuesday, Jan.11. Doors at the activity center will open at 9:30 a.m. with a short business meeting at 10 a.m. The building is located behind First Baptist Church on Pell Road. Participants are asked to bring an inexpensive item to share as prizes. Lunch will be potluck soup and dessert. Come and enjoy the company of others. New members are always welcome.

That evening will be the city council meeting in city hall at 7 p.m. Residents may speak for five minutes before the regular business is conducted. Enter at the police department entrance. Give a big happy birthday wish to the following people: David Douglas on Jan. 8; Janice Henley, Jan. 10; Chesley Woods and Ludene Welch, Jan. 11; and Carolyn Fox and Syra Roark, Jan. 12. May the candles on your cake brighten your day.

Shannon and Brannon Partain will celebrate an anniversary Jan. 14. I hope you continue to have many happy years together. The youth league will have its first basketball game Saturday, Jan. 8. I’m sure the kids are looking forward to that. Other than the parents, score is not kept for the younger kids. It’s hard enough to concentrate on getting the ball across court without having the pressure of winning on their little minds. The older kids playing full court do keep score. Next year, they will be in the school league where winning is a bigger factor.

Who knows, maybe we will have another Michael Jordan coming up the ranks or even another winning coach like Harry Statham, our gym’s namesake. He is a local boy who made good in his field. As coach for McKenzie College. he won 1122 games out of 1635 games. He graduated in 1955 from Brookport High School and was one of the first players to play on the court that is now home to our youth league. There’s a lot of history here.
