The Joppa High School Class of 2023 consisted of 15 graduates, who were honored on Friday, May 12.
The class had a valedictorians, a salutatorian and nine honors graduates. In addition, the class had four students recognized for receiving an associate’s degree or completing 30-plus hours of college credit.
Valedictorian Hayden Forthman is the son of Rodger and Crystal Forthman. He will attend Lewis University near Chicago. He dreams of becoming active in politics after practicing law. Forthman has received the Lewis’ Presidential Scholarship, Fort Massac Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Good Citizen Award and the Saint Grant Scholarship. While at JHS, Forthman was active in Scholar Bowl, Beta Club and WYSE.
Salutatorian Libbie Lumbley is the daughter of Jacob and Charlaina Johnson. She will attend Murray State University and major in math and accounting. She has received John Patrick Schmidt Scholarship, Regents Scholarship and John C. & Nell Hall Vickrey Mathematics Scholarship. While at JHS, Lumbley was on the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, WYSE, Scholar Bowl, Beta Club and math team.
JHS’ other honors graduates from the Class of 2023 and their future plans are:
• Brody Greer, the son of David and Mandy Greer. He will attend Shawnee Community College. He received the Ambassador Scholarship for SCC.
• Micah Hottel, the son of Ben and Eren Hottel. He will attend West Kentucky Community & Technical College in Paducah. He plans to attend seminary after he completes his associate’s of arts degree.
• Gunner Johnson, the son of Bob and Angela Johnson, will attend Vincennes’s University and work at the Toyota plant in Evansville while attending college.
• Paul Jones, the son of Anthony and Lori Jones, received the Earl Marlman Memorial Scholarship and John Patrick Schmidt Scholarship. He will attend SCC and pursue an associate of fish and wildlife management degree. After graduation, he wants to transfer to a university and complete a bachelor’s degree.
• Sky Keeling, the daughter of Jo and Kim Sharp, will attend MSU and pursue a criminal justice degree. She received Southern 17 Scholarship, Massac County Academic Awards Scholarship, MSU Provost Scholarship, John Patrick Schmidt Scholarship, Red Cross Scholarship and MSU’s Criminal Justice Scholarship.
• Troy Latham, the son of Shannon and Deanna Latham, will attend Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to pursue a computer science degree. He received the Massac County Home and Community Education Association Scholarship, Monzulla Family Scholarship, Resident Life Scholarship, Copper Dome Scholarship and Red Hawks Achievement Scholarship.
• Ava McNeill, the daughter of Molly Stephens, will attend SCC to complete her associate of arts degree and plans to complete her EMT certificate in the future. She has received the Legence Bank Scholarship, Massac County Home and Community Education Association Scholarship, Black Diamond Harley Davidson Scholarship, Acorn Equity Fund Scholarship and Massac County Academic Awards Scholarship. She also received a scholarship to play basketball at SCC.
• Emily Meyer, the daughter of William and Michelle Meyer, will attend SCC and complete her associate of science degree. She has received the Massac County Academic Awards Scholarship and SCC Scholarship.
• Jaxon Mitchell is the son of John Mitchell and Kim Mitchell.
The JHS Class of 2023 also included: MaKaylee Cohoon, Andrew Lyle, Jaelyn Marley and Jordyn VanMeter.
