Continuing a tradition that began 11 years ago, members of Girl Scout Troop 8029 spent their Saturday at Big John Collecting for COPE.

‘The troop, which was assisted during the day by members of Daisy Troop 08912 and Daisy Troop 8696, with help from the community raised 920 pounds of food plus $160 on Nov. 20 for COPE Food Pantry.

Troop 8029 members were in kindergarten when they began their third Saturday in November tradition by being part of Groceries for Good. When the event wasn’t held at Metropolis this year, the now-high school sophomores wanted to continued on and do it in memory of their troop leader, the late Kathy Martin, who passed away in October 2020. It was Martin who for several years scheduled all the Massac County Girl Scout troops to work the county’s grocery stores during Groceries for Good.

According to her friend and fellow troop 8029 leader Lori Rottmann, “We were always collecting things for COPE. That was important for her.”

COPE accepts food and monetary donations year round. Monetary donations made out to COPE can be mailed to COPE, P.O. Box 461, Metropolis, IL 62960. For more information on volunteering with COPE or making a food donation, call 618-524-3635.
