When people think of Thanksgiving, they associate it with families being together enjoying a wholesome meal, but for many families, putting food on the table is a day-to-day struggle. Those families in need often turn to local food pantries for assistance. Those food pantries need to have shelves stocked and ready to assist.
The Metropolis Planet is joining forces again this year with The Paducah Sun to sponsor the 27th annual Groceries for Good, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 23. At last year's event 726 bags of groceries were collected in Massac County.
Area residents will have an opportunity to help those who are in need and are hungry simply by buying a sack of groceries or donating money to Groceries for Good, which will be held at grocery stores in Metropolis from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Planet employees, along with local Girl Scouts and community volunteers, will be at Big John Grocery and Save-A-Lot.
The collected grocery items will be distributed to COPE Food Pantry, Hope Unlimited and Guardian Family Services domestic abuse shelter in Metropolis.
Individuals may shop for non-perishable items or donate money and the Girl Scout volunteers will purchase the needed items with the money.
Again this year, individuals who may be out of town or who are unable to get to the grocery store may send donations in advance of the event to The Metropolis Planet, 111 E. Fifth Street, Metropolis, IL 62960.
