Many offices and local businesses will be closed Friday, Dec. 25, in observance of Christmas, and again on Friday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Among those closing are banks, government offices, including area post offices, and most retail businesses. Banks are closing their drive-thrus at noon on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. City National Bank will also be closed on Saturday, Dec. 26. On New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31, City National Bank will close its drive-thrus at noon while Banterra and Legence will close their drive-thrus at 3 p.m. All banks will re-open on Saturday, Jan. 2.

Massac County Unit One School District and the Joppa-Maple Grove School District are on Christmas break through Jan. 1, with plans to resume in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 4.

Metropolis City Hall is closed to in-person transactions now through Jan. 4 due to increases in COVID-19 cases. City hall will be closed Thursday and Friday, Dec. 24-25, in observance of the Christmas holiday. It will also be closed Thursday and Friday, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

Brookport City Hall is closed in-person transactions due to increases in COVID-19 cases. The drive-thru will close at noon on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. City hall will be closed Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25. On New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31, the drive-thru will close at noon, and city hall will be closed New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1.

In-person access to the Massac County Courthouse remains restricted through Jan. 4 due to increases in COVID-19 cases. The courthouse will be closed Thursday and Friday, Dec. 24-25, for Christmas. The courthouse will also be closed New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1.

Metropolis trash service on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day will be delayed one day to Saturday, Dec. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 2.

Illinois Secretary of State offices and Driver Services facilities are closed for in-person transactions now through Jan. 4 due to increases in COVID-19 cases. Online services are still available at www.cyberdriveillinois.com, excluding the holidays— Thursday and Friday, Dec. 24-25, for Christmas and Thursday and Friday, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, for New Year’s. The Massac County Driver Services facility is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, Jan. 5. Secretary of State Jesse White has extended all expiration dates to June 1, 2021.

The Metropolis Planet will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, along with New Year’s Day. The deadline for the Monday, Dec. 28, Southern Scene was Wednesday, Dec. 23.

The deadline for the Monday, Jan. 4, Southern Scene is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30. The advertising and news items deadline for the Thursday, Dec. 31, Metropolis Planet is 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28.
