Two 2023 Massac County High School graduates joined the growing list of recipients for the Kerr Scholarship.
Dr. Stephen Miller, a trustee of the scholarship, made the presentation to Karen Coronado Bautista and Olivia Larrison during the 2023 Academic Ceremony on Thursday, April 27.
Bautista is the daughter of Leonardo Coronado Campanur and Ana Bautista Hurtado, both of Metropolis. Larrison is the daughter of Rob and Jennifer Larrison of Metropolis. Both will be attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Each received $1,000.
Wellman and Adeline Kerr were born and raised in Massac County. He was a cousin to Miller’s father. The Kerrs moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, after they married. According to Miller, the couple always had a deep regard for the community they grew up in and, as a final gesture, following their deaths created a trust to benefit a graduate of MCHS.
The scholarship recipient is chosen by a local committee with credit given for community service, school activities and if they have siblings who want to also attend college.
There have been over 50 scholarships totaling thousands of dollars awarded during the scholarship’s 41 years.
