Kiwanis Club donates to SAFE

David Park (left), president of the Kiwanis Club of Metropolis, recently presented Metropolis Police Department Officer Travis Wilkins a $500 donation for the department’s Special Activities for Fun and Education (SAFE) fund. SAFE was begun in May 2018 by Sgt. Carl Manley, Officer Don Helm and police Chief Harry Masse as a children’s charity drive. Donations are used for community outreach, including providing pencils and school supplies; trunk-or-treat events; the Metropolis City Pool’s Last Day Blast event and partnership with Chill-O’s for a free treat to two swimmers daily during the 2021 pool season; sponsoring a little league baseball team; events during major holidays; and assisting children after a fire, during the illness of a parent or during non-traditional times. Donations to SAFE are always welcome. Checks should be made to the Metropolis Police Department with “SAFE” in the memo line. Cash donations can be dropped off a the department, located at 1020 Broadway.
