A Brookport resident was involved in a three-vehicle collision Saturday that left one dead.
McCracken County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Interstate 24 East on the bridge at the 0.5-mile marker at approximately 1 p.m. Oct. 2.
According to the report, traffic on the interstate was congested causing traffic to come to a stop. A 2016 Chrysler van, operated by Gilbert Moorman, 76, of Springfield, was traveling east. His wife, Mary, 74, was in the front seat.
As the van approached the congestion, Moorman changed lanes and struck the rear of a 2009 Hyundai SUV, which was operated by Gary Moore, 74, of Brookport. The collision caused both vehicles to hit the trailer of a 2018 Peterbilt semi-truck operated by David Thatch, 56, of Parma. Missouri.
Moore did not have any injuries from the collision.
Mary Moorman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gilbert Moorman and Thatch were transported by ambulance to Mercy Health-Lourdes Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Both eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed for three hours as a result of the accident, causing traffic to back up into Metropolis.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Massac County Sheriff’s Department, Metropolis Police Department, Mercy EMS, Concord Fire Department, McCracken County Coroner’s Office, DES, Jeff’s Towing, C&W Towing and Stinnett’s Towing.
