Many offices and local businesses will be closed Saturday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Among those closing are banks, government offices, including area post offices, and most retail businesses.

City National Bank will close at noon on New Year’s Eve, Friday, Dec. 31. Banterra and Legence banks will close at 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. All banks will reopen on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

Metropolis City Hall will be closed Friday, Dec. 24, through Monday, Jan. 3, 2022. All City of Metropolis Public Works departments will be closed Friday, Dec. 31, through Monday, Jan. 3. Calls will be routed through the Metropolis Police Department and be directed to the appropriate party.

Bulldog Trash Services will run its regular Metropolis trash service routes during the week of New Year’s.

Brookport City Hall will be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The Massac County Courthouse will be closed Friday, Dec. 31.

Illinois Secretary of State offices and Driver Services facilities will be closed New Year’s Day only. Facilities will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 4. Online services are available at www.ilsos.gov.

The Metropolis Public Library will close at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, and reopen on Monday, Jan. 3.

The Brookport Library is closed for the holidays now through Dec. 31. It will reopen on Monday, Jan. 3.

Massac County Unit One School District and the Joppa-Maple Grove School District are on Christmas break through Dec. 31. J-MG will hold a teacher in-service on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, with students returning on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022. Unit 1 classes resume Monday, Jan. 3.

The Metropolis Planet will be closed on New Year’s Eve. The deadline for advertising and news items for the Jan. 3, 2022, Southern Scene is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29.
