No foul play suspected was the official ruling by the Illinois State Police (ISP) in a press release sent to media on Wednesday morning.

On April 5, at approximately 1:20 p.m., ISP, alongside multiple police agencies received reports of a person being shot at the Maple Grove Elementary School, located at 1698 Grand Chain Rd. near Joppa.

ISP was the lead agency investigating the incident, which occurred outside of the school involving a school district employee. The district employee was the only person involved in the incident and received a very minor injury.

At the conclusion of the investigation, it is believed the stray rifle round was fired from a long distance away in the rural area surrounding the school. There is no indication the school or anyone at the school was specifically targeted. ISP added no foul play is suspected.

The press released concluded by stating no additional information will be released regarding this incident.

As of press time, no official response had been received from the Joppa-Maple Grove School District.
