Psi Eta, a branch of the international women's service sorority Beta Sigma Phi, is remembering two Metropolis residents with the awarding of two $500 memorial scholarships.

The sorority recently presented the Kathy Martin Memorial Scholarship to Madison McDaniel and the Psi Eta Service Scholarship/Julie Ann Taylor Memorial Scholarship to Sydney Wilke. Both recipients are Massac County High School seniors.

This is the first year of the Kathy Martin Memorial Scholarship. Martin, who passed away in October 2020, was a founding member of Psi Eta.

“She often would reach out to others, connect with people and make them feel welcome and special,” said Nichole Taylor, the sorority’s recording secretary. “She was an active member of our beloved community, and gave of herself though many of her community and volunteer organizations.”

Applicants for the scholarship had to be nominated by MCHS staff. The nominee had to be a senior who demonstrated leadership skills, and is kind and compassionate.

McDaniel, of Metropolis, has helped the community with projects involving the FFA and 4-H. She plans to attend West Kentucky Community and Technical College, majoring in agriculture, and transferring to Murray State University.

This is the sixth year of the Psi Eta Service Scholarship/Julie Ann Taylor Memorial Scholarship. It is given to a female high school senior who plans to pursue a college degree/college program certification. Candidates must provide volunteer activities, hours of service and complete an essay on a service volunteer moment that had a lasting impact on them. The scholarship has been named in honor of the late Julie Ann Taylor, the daughter of Joyce and Ron Taylor of Metropolis and the sister of Psi Eta member Amy Taylor Jefferson.

“The scholarship was created in 2015 in celebration of her dedication towards Christ and her service to Metropolis,” Nichole Taylor explained.

Wilke, the daughter of Julie and David Wilke of Karnak, plans to attend Southeastern Missouri State University and major in general health sciences.

Psi Eta, of Metropolis, is a branch of the Beta Sigma Phi International, a women's social, cultural and service based organization.
