Reading celebration
Summer water games ruled the morning Tuesday, July 25, as the Metropolis Public Library celebrated the end of its 2022 Summer Reading Program. A total of 68 pre-kindergartners through fourth-graders participated in the program each Tuesday, June 1 through July 19, with activities and reading time for the different age groups. This year's theme was “Read Beyond the Beaten Path,” looking at everything in the outdoors from camping to fishing to scavenger hunts to bugs and insects. The wrap-up party included a water slide, giant Jenga, water balloons and a kiddie slide. City National Bank provided its ice cream trike. Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition handed out goodies. “The community has been incredible during this year's Summer Reading Program,” said library director Rosemary Baxter. “We had 75 businesses and individuals who sponsored it. We are so grateful.” The library’s next big program is its After School Program, open to first- through third-graders of working parents/guardians; appointments for registration, which will be Aug. 1-3, should be made by Friday, July 29, by calling 618-524-4312.
