Back to School Bash is Sunday

The Metropolis City Pool will be the site of a free Back to School Bash for local families from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, sponsored by the Metropolis Police Department. The event will feature food, bounce houses and various activities for children. Everyone is invited to attend.

Benefit dinner is Sunday

Vienna Masonic Lodge 150 AF&AM and Egyptian Chapter 30 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Sunday at the Masonic Temple on Old Route 146 Loop. The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The menu will include deep-fried fish filets, hushpuppies, French fries, barbecue beans, cole slaw, dessert and drink. The cost is $10 for adults; $5 for children, ages 6-12; and children under 6 eat free. Carryout orders will be available. The public is invited.

Just Friends to perform

Just Friends will be the featured band at Monday Night Live on Aug. 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St., Monday Night Live features live bands and dancing. A donation is required in order for this program to continue.

Diabetes program scheduled

Massac Memorial Hospital of Metropolis will host a free diabetes support group from 4-5 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, Aug. 13, in the hospital's boardroom. Attendees will learn how to manage diabetes by understanding basic diabetes information and terminology. The August meeting will feature a discussion on medications and new technologies for diabetes care. For more information, call Karla Clark at 618-524-2176, ext. 2285.

Clothing giveaway planned

The Food Pantry will be open and a clothing giveaway is planned on Thursday, Aug. 8 at Weaver Creek Baptist Church, located on the corner of North Avenue and Upper Salem Church Road, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Different clothing items have been added, and the pantry will be open for those in need. Everyone is invited.

Grief support group available

Lourdes Hospice's Metropolis location, located at 704 E. Fifth St., will host a monthly grief support group the first Tuesday of each month at noon. This is a free support group and is open to anyone who would like to attend. For information, call the Metropolis office at 618-524-3757.

Farmers Market available

The local Farmers Market will be on the Massac County Courthouse square, weather permitting, every Saturday morning from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Gary Verbarge at 618-645-1409.

Support group to meet

St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 520 Ferry St. in Metropolis, is the site of a support group for family members and those with mental illness. Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month from 7-8 p.m. For information, call 618-524-5628.
