Shawnee Community College (SCC) is taking steps to expand its automotive/diesel technology program.
The college board of trustees recently voted to hire Jared English of Massac County as the full-time instructor for the program. The full-time position will allow English increased opportunity for further expanding the program to allow for more students to attend each semester.
The expansion will also allow for growing hours of availability to provide the public with opportunities to utilize the automotive shop for light maintenance and repair.
English said the expansion of the program would help residents interested in the field of automotive/diesel technology to obtain employment in the automotive repair industry locally and allow residents to remain in the region and promote the local economy.
"I am excited to recruit students for the upcoming semester. We are looking forward to enrollment beginning Nov. 4 and the opportunity to speak with interested students about our program," English said.
The expansion allows more students to enroll in the program and earn either a certificate or degree from SCC. There are several different areas students can focus on during the program, which provides students with hands-on training opportunities with instruction by an ASE Master Technician with over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry.
This program prepares students to obtain employment as an automotive technician or to potentially become a business owner by opening their own automotive repair shop.
SCC offers many "quick to work" programs that can assist members of the community who have been displaced from their current employment or are perhaps considering beginning a new career.
