The COVID-19 virus circulating the country has canceled multiple events and gatherings, including the 2020 Metropolis Superman Celebration scheduled for June 11-14.
The announcement was made March 19 on the Greater Metropolis Convention and Vistors Bureau’s (GMCVB) Facebook page.
The celebration is organized by the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce and primarily funded by the GMCVB, the City of Metropolis and local business sponsors.
According to celebration Co-Chair Karla Ogle, the Chamber of Commerce’s primary concern is the safety of the visitors and guests. Ogle also said the deadline for several non-refundable deposits was approaching. If these deposits were made and the celebration was canceled at a later date it would put a large financial burden on the chamber as the celebration is the chamber’s top fundraiser.
The next Superman Celebration is scheduled for June 10-13, 2021.
