Many offices and local businesses will be closed Thursday and/or Friday, Nov. 25-26, in observance of Thanksgiving.

Among those closing on Nov. 25 will be banks, government offices, including area post offices, and most retail businesses.

Massac County Unit One School District and the Joppa-Maple Grove School District will not be in session Wednesday, Nov. 24 through Friday, Nov. 26.

Metropolis City Hall and the Massac County Courthouse will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Metropolis trash service will be delayed one day Thursday and Friday.

Illinois Secretary of State offices and Driver Services facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday. Online services are available at ILSOS.gov.

The Metropolis Planet will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

The Thanksgiving week issue of the Metropolis Planet will publish one day early, on Wednesday, Nov. 24. The deadline for advertising and news items is 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22.

The deadline for the Monday, Nov. 29, Southern Scene is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The Massac Ministers Alliance will host its annual Community Thanksgiving Service at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 605 Metropolis St. The public is invited to attend.

Rev. Lauren Lambert-Goheen, the church’s current paster, will bring the message.

“This is a very special year for our Community Thanksgiving service,” said Pastor Jim Duncan, an alliance member. “The 2020 service had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will also be the final Community Thanksgiving Service at Trinity Presbyterian. This church has been a staple in the community for decades, and unfortunately they will be closing their doors Dec. 26. We invite all who are able to come join us and have one last look at this beautiful church.”

New Hope Baptist in New Columbia will host its annual Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Turkey, dressing, drinks and rolls will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.
