Two of five Southern 17 Scholarships awarded in county

For a number of years, Southern Illinois Community Foundation has overseen the finances of the Massac County Academic Awards Ceremony. More recently, the foundation became the event’s scholarship essay judge. The ceremony is just one of many such events the foundation manages and in conjunction with the role and “to give back” to those communities, SIFC created the Southern 17 Scholarship. Application is open to any high school senior in SICF’s service area of the 17 southernmost counties. Five scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2023. Two of them went to seniors from Massac County — Olivia Larrison (center), of Massac County High School, and Sky Keeling of Joppa High School. Each received $500 from SIFC CEO/executive director Byram Fager during the 2023 Academic Ceremony on Thursday, April 27. “We’re here to give back to the scholarships we oversee,” Fager said. “We had a ton of scholarships to chose from.” Larrison is the daughter of Rob and Jennifer Larrison, of Metropolis. She will be attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Keeling is the daughter of Jo and Kim Sharp of Joppa. She will be attending Murray State University.
