Fireworks, more featured Friday
Harrah's Metropolis Casino will be the site of the annual Hometown Celebration on Friday, July 5, featuring a Kid's Zone with numerous obstacle courses, bounce houses and more from 6-9 p.m. Food will be provided by Montego's To-Go and Sissy's A Sweet Shoppe, along with drinks to purchase throughout the evening. DJ Michelle Bradley will entertain the crowd throughout the evening. A large display of fireworks will be lighting up the sky at approximately 9:15 p.m. A $5 entry fee is required for anyone 2 years and older. The proceeds will benefit the Harrah's Metropolis School Supply Giveaway, which will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 at the Metropolis Community Center. Cash is required for all purchases.
Ice Cream Social July 25
Organizers are making final plans for this year's St. John Lutheran Church, which will be held Thursday, July 25 on the church grounds at 5187 Old Marion Road, near Jefferson School in Metropolis. Serving time begins at 5 p.m.Hand-cranked homemade style ice cream, featuring a selection of pineapple-orange or vanilla, along with pork burgers, hamburgers, bratwurst, homemade chicken salad and hot dogs prepared on the premises, will be available. In addition, there will be homemade pies, cakes and a variety of other foods all for the price of a freewill donation. Bulk ice cream may be purchased by the gallon with quantity limits per customer. Freewill donations will be accepted to help local families in need. Everyone is invited.
Cancer support for women available
Baptist Health Paducah will offer a new support group for women with all kinds of cancer, beginning in July. The SIS: Support, Inspire and Survive support group will meet at 6 p.m. each Tuesday, starting July 16, for six weeks in the Ray and Kay Eckstein Regional Cancer Care Center. A second session of six-week meetings will begin Oct. 1. Each meeting will focus on different topics important to cancer patients. Participants are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early for a meet and greet session to chat with fellow members, guests and staff. Light snacks will be available. Concert planned, pantry opened
The Southern Gospel family, Endless Highway, will present a concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 7 at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, located at 670 Airport Rd. in Metropolis. Everyone is invited. A freewill offering will be received, with no tickets required. Also the church's food pantry is opened two Tuesdays in July: 9 and 23 from 6-7:30 p.m. Anyone can come for groceries.
Blood drive to be held July 12
The American Red Cross will host a blood drive at Massac Memorial Hospital, located at 28 Chick St. in Metropolis, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12. To make an appointment, call 800-733-2767.
Clothing giveaway July 12
Metropolis Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 2324 North Ave., will host a clothing giveaway from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, July 12 for the public. The church is handicap accessible. A drawing for a gift card will also be held.
Just Friends to perform
Just Friends will be the featured band at Monday Night Live on July 8 starting at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St., Monday Night Live features live bands and dancing. A donation is required in order for this program to continue.
Fishing clinics scheduled at center
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will off a series of free youth catch-and-release clinics at Cache River Wetlands Center. The clinics will be held Thursdays from 9-11 a.m. on July 11 and 18. Instructors will present information on fish and other aquatic life; fishing rules and regulations; and basic instructions on baiting a hook, tying a knot and casting, tactics for catching fish and how to handle and return fish to the water. Participants may bring their own equipment or will be provided with rods, reels, bait and tackle for 90 minutes of catch-and-release fishing. The clinics are targeted towards children 16 and younger, but anyone interested in learning basic fishing techniques can attend. Parents and other adults are not required to have a fishing license to assist during this program. To register in advance, call the wetlands center at 618-657-2064.
Young Trekkers program offered
Shawnee National Forest is hosting summer Young Trekkers program at the Lincoln Memorial Picnic Grounds in Jonesboro on three consecutive Tuesdays: July 9, 16 and 23 from 10-11:30 a.m. A different theme will be covered each week. Diabetes program scheduled
Massac Memorial Hospital of Metropolis will host a free diabetes support group from 4-5 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, July 9, in the hospital's boardroom. Attendees will learn how to manage diabetes by understanding basic diabetes information and terminology. The July meeting will include a grocery store tour. Post 306 hosting event
Metropolis American Legion Post 306 Ladies Auxiliary host a Lucky Sevens event the first Saturday of each month with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the early bird games starting at 6 p.m. The post is located at 321 Market St. Players may bring dobbers, or they can be purchased at the post.
