Hospice to be discussed

Stephan Ackermann of Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc. will present a special program as part of Massac Memorial Hospital's New Beginnings program at noon on Tuesday, June 18. This is a free community event, and lunch will be provided. To reserve a seat, call 618-524-7370 by June 14.

Free block party is June 20

Hope Unlimited Family Care Center will host a free block party for area families from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20 on the soccer field at Lincoln Park, located on East Fifth Street in Metropolis. Featured will be free food, cotton candy, balloon art, face painting, bounce house, fire truck and more. Hope Closet will also have a special sale -- fill a bag for $4. The street will be closed between Third and Fifth.

VBS carnival kickoff Sunday

Eastland Life Church, located at 716 E. Third St. in Metropolis, will have a carnival kickoff on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. This begins the church's "ROAR" Vacation Bible School (VBS) week. Regular sessions will be June 17-21 from 6-8:30 p.m. for children, ages 3 to sixth grade.

Nature Study Society

The Massac Nature Study Society will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the lower level of the Metropolis Public Library, located at 317 Metropolis St. John Schwegman will present a nature program on Newfoundland and the Gaspe Peninsula. This slide program covers the west coast of Newfoundland, including coastal tundra, rare orchids, a beached whale, icebergs and more. Anyone with an interest in nature is invited to attend this free presentation.

Just Friends to perform

Just Friends will be the featured band at Monday Night Live on June 17 starting at 6:30 p.m. Held at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W. 10th St., Monday Night Live features live bands and dancing. A donation is required in order for this program to continue.

Family Trekkers scheduled

Shawnee National Forest naturalists will host a series of family hikes called "Family Trekkers." Families will discover natural wonders along the trail on three different guided hikes and participate in activities designed for any age. The hikes will be held on the following Saturdays: June 11, Lake Glendale Recreation Area; June 18, Pounds Hollow Recreation Area; and June 25, Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area. All programs are from 10-11:30 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged by calling the Mississippi Bluffs Ranger District at 618-833-8576. An added bonus, each location has picnic areas and Lake Glendale and Pounds Hollow have a swimming beach; so pack a lunch and swimming gear for after the program.

Food pantry open Saturday

Emmanuel Temple Ministries COGIC, located at 509 Broadway in Metropolis, will distribute food 8-10 a.m. on Saturday. The food pantry is here to serve the community, and all are welcome. For more information, contact Daphane Jackson 618-638- 7099.

Kangaroo Klub to meet

Baptist Health Paducah will sponsor a Kangaroo Klub for breastfeeding mothers from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1119 Market St. in Metropolis. The support group is for women who breastfeed or expectant mothers who plan to breastfeed. For more information, call 270-415-4680.
