McDaniel being honored Friday

A drive-by farewell and thank you event for retiring Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 7, in the front parking lot of First Baptist Church, 307 Massac Creek Road, Metropolis. McDaniel has spent the last 20 years serving the City of Metropolis with four years as alderman and the last 16 as mayor. The family requests no gifts; cards are welcome. COVID guidelines will be followed.

Graduation ceremonies planned for May 14

Massac County High School, Joppa High School and Century High School will hold their graduation ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14. Joppa Junior High School will hold its graduation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18. Massac Junior High School graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 13. Attendance to each is extremely limited due to COVID restrictions. Those in attendance will be required to wear masks and social distance. The Metropolis Planet’s annual senior salute will be in the May 13 edition.

McDonald’s recognizing area teachers

The Metropolis McDonald’s is among the chain’s local restaurants celebrating area teachers by offering a free beverage of choice now through Friday, May 14, as part of National Teacher Appreciation Day, which was May 4. The offer is available at the drive-thru only; hours may vary by location. To redeem, teachers must show a valid educator ID when ordering; no purchase is necessary. Offer valid at participating locations while supplies last.
