Daniel Lee Rushing, 72, of Metropolis, originally from Johnson County, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, at his home.

Born Nov. 15, 1946, Mr. Rushing was a 1964 graduate of Vienna High School. He attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale from 1964-68 graduating with a bachelor's degree in secondary education.

Mr. Rushing started his teaching career at Meridian High School in the fall of 1968. He continued his teaching career at Shawneetown High School beginning in the fall of 1969. He obtained his master of science degree in educational administration and foundations in June 1972. He served as principal of Shawneetown Grade School and later Shawneetown High School from 1972 until 1979.

He began a new career path in August 1979 with Country Companies Insurance of the Illinois Farm Bureau. He served as an agent in Saline County from 1979 through 1990. He and his wife opened the first satellite office of the Country Companies, which was away from the local Farm Bureau office. They opened this office in Galatia in 1981 and remained there until 1990, at which time Mr. Rushing made a move into the management division in the Country Financial organization.

In June 1990, he developed a new agency for the Country Companies in Spokane, Washington and remained there until October 1995, when he and his wife moved back to Illinois to assume the management of the Shawnee Agency, consisting of Massac, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties. Mr. Rushing remained in this position until his retirement in August 2012, which represented a career total of 33 years.

Mr. Rushing opened a business in Paducah in September 2012 known as Stringworks LLC. It was a repair and restoration facility for stringed instruments and tube amplifiers.

He was a member of the former Gurney Masonic Lodge 778 and a current member of Eddyville Masonic Lodge 672. He was an honorary member of several other local lodges in the southern Illinois area.

He was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Verna Kerley Rushing; his daughters, Chandra Rushing and Chelli Rushing; his grandchildren, Christian Luke Stanley and Chaitlyn Leah Stanley and fiancé Chaitlyn's Johnny Foos; his stepgrandson, Ian Hardison; his stepgreat-grandson, Vincent Hardison; one brother, Ronald Rushing and wife Helen; one sister, Ellen Broom and husband Bill; his in-laws, Rillis and Lillian Kerley; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Velma "Shorty" and John Waters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Mary Anita Harrison Rushing.

Masonic funeral rites were conducted Sunday followed by the funeral service at Glendale United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Rush officiating the service.

Burial followed at Glendale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Phil Valestin, Danny Rockwell, Grant Loudy, Christian Stanley, Carl Brasher, John McCuan, Bob Futch, Jerry Jones and Chesley Williams.
