The pandemic still threatens. Many face economic ruin. Racial tensions have exploded into violence. Anarchy and discord threaten national survival. Seldom have so many serious crisis come to the fore at the same time, as in these distressing days.

There is a way out. That way is Jesus Christ. At the root of our problems is spiritual poverty. As a nation, we have forgotten, or simply turned away from God.

We need revival.

A foreign observer, curious as to the source of American greatness, observed it to originate in our churches, and in the Christian faith of the American people. Alexis de Toqueville summed up his observations, “America is great because America is good; if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.”

President Lincoln once said that America could never be destroyed by an invading army. If America were ever destroyed, it would be from within.

Could there be such a simple solution? Why not? In the Welsh revival in the early 1900s, it was said that the horses could no longer understand their (cab) drivers, because they had so thoroughly cleaned up their language. Policemen had little to do, and mischief and drunkenness had decreased drastically.

Faith Comes By Hearing, an organization that provides audio Bibles to many around the world, once summed up (in an email) the five most common things that happen when people come to the Lord through hearing God’s Word, the Bible:

1. People stop getting drunk.

2. Men stop beating their wives.

3. People stop visiting pagan shrines.

4. Believers share their faith and churches grow.

5. Believers start tithing (giving 10% or more of their income), allowing pastors to give up other vocations and focus on their churches.

The Christian faith is centered on Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins we all commit, and who also rose from the dead to give eternal life to all who follow Him. Jesus taught that the Great Commandment is, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your strength, and all your soul, and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:30) From this flows the Golden Rule: Do unto others what you want them to do for you.” (Matthew 7:12)

Surely, our nation, and every nation, would benefit from following Jesus.
