The Harry Statham Youth Basketball League just wrapped up another banner year with its third- and fourth-grade tournaments for boys and girls.
The boys’ championship game conclude with coach Jared Sexton’s team coming out on top. The girls’ championship game went into overtime with coach Brad Clark’s team pulling out the win.
The day, which was Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Harry Statham Gym in Brookport, also included a slam dunk contest for the youngsters. The throw down attracted 40-plus first- and second-graders giving it their best “Air Jordan” imitation. On the boy’s side, Gabe Davis, who won last year as a first-grader, defended his crown.
This year’s turnout included 29 basketball teams and five cheer teams.
On hand for the games and ceremonies were the Hall of Famers themselves — coach Harry Statham and his wife Miss Rose. For the second consecutive year, the velvety voice of Shawnee Community College Saints basketball, Jim Childers, was on hand to emcee the event.
Many, many thanks go to the HSYBL board and all of the volunteers who continue to make this undertaking a big success.
