Unlike their male counterparts, Massac County’s Lady Patriots are a veteran bunch with some young talent waiting in the wings.
Monday night’s season opener at Murphysboro saw four seniors and a sophomore on the court for their first game of the 2021 season.
It didn’t take long for Massac’s superior size and defensive pressure to show up.
After eight minutes of play, Massac led 15-4 and the end result was basically sealed.
Center Callie McCraw put up 10 first quarter points and sharpshooter Farrah Castleman added eight to give Massac a 29-14 halftime lead.
Murphy briefly cut Massac’s lead to 10 in the third quarter with a Massac turnover and a Red Devil 3-pointer, but they were never closer than 10 after that, and Massac rolled to an easy 69-40 win.
Massac suited up only nine players for the game and all nine got on the floor.
McCraw led the ladies in scoring with 18.
Castleman added 15, Bormann had 14 points as eight of the nine girls who played got in the scorer’s book.
