For the first time in recent memory, Massac County High School's (MCHS) girls golf program actually may be in a rebuilding mode . . . a little bit?
Last year, Coach Laurie Glass had a solid core to build on and was a little concerned about finding her fourth scorer. That team eventually finished second in the state tournament.
From that group Glass lost Mady Blair, Madison Cunningham and Millie Lawson. That's a lot of firepower.
Glass has returning senior Madie Coakley who likely will anchor the squad and fellow senior Gracie Stewart.
She has junior returnees Lily Conkle, Alexis Frazine and McKinnley Korte to round out her squad. Conkle, Frazine and Korte all had their moments last year and the potential of this group appears to be pretty high.
Glass also has a handful of underclassmen waiting to get their chance with sophomores Delaney Troutman and Delaney Williams and freshmen "Izzy" Hawes, Olivia Heine and Josie Walker.
As always, the girls aren't waiting around. They have already played in a prep showcase event in Forsyth and faced as tough a field as they will see all year.
Glass also has an added bit of "ammo" with a new assistant coach in Mallory McVey. McVey brings knowledge of the game and a deadly sense of humor to the table.
Only time will tell but don't be surprised by anything this group accomplishes.
