Following their tough 5-3 loss to powerful McCracken County last week, the Lady Patriots shrugged off the disappointment and defeated the Benton Rangerettes 8-1 for a nice SIRR conference win.
The Lady Patriots were rock solid at Benton on Friday, April 28, as Chloe Dassing threw a complete game, allowing one run while walking none and striking out 13. Larkin Korte and Riley Baumgart wielded the big sticks for Massac with both driving in three runs. Jadynn Willard knocked in two runs with a double, and Hannah Edwards went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Johnston City (23-5) was next up on the Lady Patriots’ schedule and the road game on Monday, May 1, went south in a hurry as the Lady Indians piled up a 17-7 five-inning win.
The game was actually tied 6-6 going into the fourth inning, but the Indians scored 11 big runs in their last two at-bats for the 10-run, five-inning win.
Playing in the blustery winds Monday, the Lady Patriots didn’t execute. Throwing errors and dropped fly balls gave a good Johnston City team all the impetus it needed for the five-inning win.
Willard and MacKenzie Dassing provided the offense for Massac in the loss with both pounding three-run homers.
When Cobden canceled its Tuesday, May 2, matchup in Metropolis, Marshall County got the invite.
After the pre-game Senior Day festivities, there wasn’t a lot going on for five of the seven innings, but the other two made up for it.
Marshall scratched out a run in the fourth inning with Chloe Dassing working out of a jam, while surrendering a lone run. Massac had an answer as Edwards cracked a double off the left center fence, and Korte followed with a shot to right center that cleared the fence for a 2-1 lead.
Chloe Dassing got into some trouble in the sixth frame with runners on first and second and no one out. She induced a hard ground ball to short, and Edwards and Willard got a force out at second. She then got another hard grounder to short and, with Edwards playing a little more up the middle, she had no trouble fielding the ball, stepping on second then firing a strike to first for a 6-3 double play.
If that pickle wasn’t sour enough, Chloe Dassing found herself with the bases loaded and two outs in the Lady Marshals last at-bat. A long fly ball to center sent shivers up the Massac folks’ backs, but Korte snagged it just before crashing into the chain links of center field, and the celebration began in earnest.
The win pulled the Lady Patriots’ record almost to .500 with a 10-11 ledger. Massac is in second place in the SIRR Ohio with an 8-2 record.
The Lady Patriots are away at Anna today, Thursday, May 4, and at home on Friday, May 5, against Goreville.
