Longtime Massac County Volleyball Coach Zach Miller has some big shoes to fill this fall also with some big time graduation losses.
Losing names like Stepter, Duckworth, Jackson, Deming etc. has left some large holes in Miller's lineup, but the cupboard isn't bare yet. Miller has a nice group of returning players and a healthy number of underclassmen from which to fill the void.
Returning for the 2019 campaign are seniors Jessie Lewis and Kara Womack. From the junior class Miller has Jenna Bunting, Netanya Carlson, Ashley Davis, Madison Hammonds, Cali McCraw, Maci Miller and Sydney Wilke. Sophomores are Kelis Adams, Jordan Barnett, Claire Bremer, Natalie Carlson, Hailey Edwards, Izzy Hawes, Dominique Russell and Ella Stephens.
Miller also has a nice number of freshmen on the roster also including: Allie Batha, Sophie Bormann, Celeigh Culver, Monique Hart, Olivia Heine, Trinity Lott and Maddie Roberts.
Miller has some net presence in Lewis and McCraw and hopes to see improvement in right-side hitting and overall speed of play.
Miller, like always, has his team playing a loaded schedule and may pay a price for it early on. But that old saw about "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" holds true in volleyball as well.
One thing that may benefit the Lady Patriots this year is the IHSA enrollment re-alignment for Massac volleyball. The ladies will play in the 2A classification this year instead of the 3A class they were in last year.
Massac fell to Carbondale in the Harrisburg class 3A regional finals.
