Tuesday’s IHSA Class AA regional at Mt. Vernon’s Green Hills Country Club marked the end of Massac County’s 2020 boys’ golf season. To absolutely no one’s surprise, the Benton Rangers walked away with first place on the team side and their sensational sophomore Cy Norman tore up the Green Hills track with a five under par 66 to take individual honors.
Carbondale was the other team to advance on to the Centralia sectional, which will ostensibly end the high school golf season. Massac coach Gary Adkins’ relatively inexperienced Patriot team ended up well off the pace set by Benton and Carbondale. Benton shot a 307 and Carbondale was surprisingly close with a 315.
Harrisburg shot 327, Herrin 341, Carterville 354, Massac County 367, Mt. Vernon 373 and Murphysboro came in at 390.
With several youngsters on his roster that are relative newcomers to the game, Adkins was realistic all year about his team’s chances but said he wouldn’t change a thing about this group.
“It’s one of the best groups I’ve ever had and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” he said.
Adkins will lose seniors Andrew Maurer, who has only played the game a couple of years, Hayden Summers who was Massac’s “anchor” for most of the year, and JJ Sweatt, another relative newcomer to the game.
