Massac County traveled to Vienna on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, seeking to right the ship.
After a late inning collapse at Harrisburg last Thursday, March 23, in a 7-5 loss to visiting Pleasant Plains, the Patriots were shut out by Carterville 4-0 on Monday, March 27.
Vienna was just off of a 6-4 win over SIRR foe Herrin and are off to a 3-1 start.
Massac’s starting pitcher Andy Girot had trouble with his control in the first inning, walking a couple of batters and plunking a couple as the Eagles plated two runs in their first at bat.
Massac came back to tie things up at two apiece in the fourth inning, but Vienna took control of things with three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-2 lead. The Eagles tacked on one more run in the sixth for a 6-2 lead and then slammed the door on a potential seventh inning rally by the Patriots to record the win.
Massac had the bases loaded with one out when Vienna made a pitching change. The fresh arm made the difference, recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Bases on balls, walks and errors in the field combined to send the Patriots to their third straight loss.
The Patriots have two more road games on the docket before coming home on Monday, April 3, for a match with Murphysboro. Today, Thursday, March 30, sees the Patriots at Marion’s Rent One Park with a game against Carpentersville’s Dundee-Crown High School, which has an enrollment of 2,500, and Friday, March 31, has an away game against Mayfield slated.
The Patriots’ record falls to 2-5.
