Massac County’s Patriots golf team held off home-standing Mt. Vernon for a second-place finish in the Mt. Vernon Class AA golf regional at Green Hills Golf Club just outside of Mt. Vernon last Wednesday, Sept. 29.
Benton took team honors with a red hot 282 team total. While they were 31 strokes off Benton’s pace, the Patriots turned in their best performance of the year with a 313, prompting Massac coach Gary Adkins to say, “They finally put it together.”
Indeed they did, with only one senior and a host of underclassmen, the Patriots put up good numbers across the board.
Freshman Gabe Rottmann and sophomore Preston Summers led the Patriot charge with a pair of 76s. Lone senior Isaac Burnett was solid with an 80 and sophomore Luke Maurer rose to the occasion with an 81.
Carbondale’s Ian Davis was the overall medalist with a terrific, six under par 65.
Effingham Country Club was the Patriots’ next stop, and it proved to be the end of the road for them.
The Patriots finished seventh in the field with Breese Mater Dei surprising Benton for the team title. Mater Dei shot a great round of 293 to ease by Benton’s 296. Belleville’s Althoff Catholic nosed out Mattoon by four strokes to claim the third spot in the sectional.
Carbondale’s Ian Davis continued his hot streak with a four under par 68 to take individual honors.
Massac County’s 331 was led by Maurer with an even 80. Burnett shot 82, Rottmann shot an 84, Bennett Neely shot 85, Summers shot 87 and John Stephenson carded a 99.
All in all, these boys turned in a pretty darn good year, and with all the youth on the team, this bunch will be heard from for a while.
