Prep Wrap

Haley Pittman goes down for the dig against Dongola Tuesday evening. Century won in straight sets.

The Patriot boys golf team may have just learned an invaluable lesson.

Coach Gary Adkins has always tried to stress the importance of each and every shot they execute, but last week's Herrin match should have drove home the wisdom of his words. At the end of the nine-hole match, Herrin -- who had beaten Massac's team score twice already this year at Massac and at A-J -- and Massac County each had carded the same score.

The format is then you count your fifth player's scores if the team scores are a tie. Herrin's fifth man and Massac's fifth man also tied. You guessed it, you then count the sixth score if you have six players. Lo and behold, Isaac Burnett eked out a one-stroke margin over his Herrin Tiger counterpart. I bet Burnett didn't think he would be the hero of the match on the way to Herrin. Adkins then drove the nail home when he asked Burnett and every member of the team if they thought that they could have played one stroke better than they did. Good job, boys.

Long time sports anchor for WSIL-TV Channel 3, Darren Kinnard, put the wraps on a 26 year career last week. Kinnard has been spotted all over southern Illinois covering high school sports event [mainly] and will be sorely missed. He, like long time Paducah Sun writer Joey Fosko, was a fixture on the high school sports scene.

Massac's girl golf team also got in a win last week at Carterville. The girls upended the Lady Lions at Crab Orchard Golf Club. Maddie Coakley was the overall medalist with a nice 37.

The Patriot cross country team ran in the Marion Fast Start Invitational last week on the Marion High School course and turned in a credible performance. Ansley Bailey won the 2.98 mile event on the girls' side with a time of 20:17. Shaley Looney ran 16th and Grace Willis came in 31st. On the boys' side, Emilio Bautista was the top Patriot finisher with a time of 19:06, good enough for 17th place. Evan Allbritten finished in 20:09 and 26th place. Carbondale's boys team took first place with Centralia coming in second and Carterville's girls team won their side with Carbondale's girls team running second.

Massac's soccer team and boys' golf team were both in action Tuesday evening, but no results yet.

Massac County's underclass football teams have both seen action now. The frosh lost a hard fought road game to DuQuoin to open their season, and the sophomore team traveled to DuQuoin also on Tuesday night. No results from that one yet.

Down at Century, Raegan Hannan's volleyball team has gotten off well in South Egyptian conference play. The Lady "C"s are 6-0 after winning the Egyptian Invitational for the third consecutive year last weekend and dropped the Lady Demons from Dongola Tuesday night in a lop-sided 25-5 and 25-10 straight set victory. After the 25-5 win in the first set, things were a little unsettled in the second set ... for a minute or so. Trailing 5-6 early in the second set, the Lady "C"s went on a 20-4 tear to put Dongola away. Century beat Meridian, Egytian, Joppa and Cairo to win the tournament at Egyptian.
