On their Senior Night, the Benton Rangers rolled to a 48-12 win over Massac on Friday, Oct. 8, to remain unbeaten, setting up a SIRR Conference title showdown with Murphysboro this Friday night, Oct. 15.
Benton wasted no time, getting on the board with their first possession. They scored on a 20-yard run by quarterback Keegan Glover to draw first blood and a 7-0 lead.
Massac moved the ball well enough with the aid of some Benton penalties, but couldn’t capitalize. Benton got another first quarter score on a long Glover to Baumgarte pass play and a 14-0 first quarter lead.
To begin the second quarter, Benton put together a 90-yard drive that took maybe two minutes off the clock. It ended with Baumgarte catching his school record 12th touchdown pass of the year. The half ended 27-0.
Massac fans got their highlight of the evening when TreShaun Bagby broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown bolt on the first play of the half.
Benton answered immediately and additionally tacked on two more scores for a 48-6 third quarter score and a “running clock.”
Massac hit pay dirt one more time in the final frame for the 48-12 final.
Massac is scheduled to travel to West Frankfort this Friday, Oct. 15, to meet with the Redbirds, who have struggled the last couple of weeks with player eligibility and illness, but the last word is the game is still on.
