The Murphysboro Red Devils brought down the curtain on the 2019 MCHS baseball season as the 'Devils won a "close to the vest" 3-1 game in the play-in game [quarterfinal] of the Carterville Class 3A regional.

Jase Mizell was, once again, the hard-luck losing pitcher. Mizell gave up three runs in five innings with Brandon Burnett throwing a scoreless last frame.

Massac's offense consisted of Ethan Parks and Zach Travis. Parks had both of Massac's hits and drove in Travis in the first inning to account for Massac's lone run.

Murphy answered Massac's first inning run with a pair of counters to re-take the lead and added an insurance run in the fifth for the 3-1 final.

Murphy took on Carterville Wednesday with the winner taking on the winner of the Thursday match-up between Carbondale and Herrin.

The regional winner will be crowned after the 11 a.m. Saturday matchup of the two winners.
