With all the COVID distractions getting in the way this year, it really is nice to get back to something approaching normal in the realm of high school sports.
With golf and cross country being the only “game in town” right now and cross country almost exclusively being on the road, Massac County’s golf teams are giving fans something to look forward to.
A trio of Lady Pats seniors are leading an impressive charge out of the gate. Lily Conkle, Alexis Frazine and McKinnley Korte and company have hit the ground running and the Lady Pats have fired the proverbial “shot over the bow” for their competition. Along with freshman Elise Coakley (yep, there’s “another one of them Coakley girls” that can swing a club), the Lady Pats have shown some absolute flashes of brilliance, mixed in with a smattering of mediocre play just to be fair.
At Red Hawk Golf Club last week, the girls torched the field with a team total of 149 for the nine-hole match. That figured out to a five over par cumulative total for the four “counters”: Coakley, Conkle, Frazine and Korte. With all the COVID restrictions and the fluidity of the current situation, who knows what the next month holds for these girls, but let it be known now that they’re a handful to contend with.
